DFCC Family Mediation and Information Service

The Durham Family Court Clinic is seeking highly skilled Family Mediators with extensive qualifications and experience.  On a contractual basis and as part of a team, DFCC Family Mediators provide the following court connected services: 

  • On-site mediation (at court),
  • Off-site mediation (at DFCC offices),
  • Information and Referral Services at the Family Law Information Centre (Oshawa courthouse)
  • Group presentations - of the Mandatory Information Program material for family court clients and the public. 

Mediator Experience & Skills

  • Experience mediating complex family issues
  • Sensitivity to cultural issues
  • Extensive experience in identifying and working with issues of domestic violence
  • Advanced knowledge of family law pertaining to the areas of mediation practices
  • Advanced interviewing, communication and assessment skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial and property issues as they relate to separation and divorce
  • Strong group presentation skills 

Mediator Qualifications

Applicants must provide proof of accreditation by the OAFM or certification by FMC or certification by the ADR Institute of Ontario or have the following qualifications: 

  • A professional degree or equivalent significantly directly related experience
  • A minimum of 60 hours of training in family mediation (a basic and advanced level course)
  • A minimum of 14 hours of initial domestic violence education or training
  • A minimum of 100 hours of supervision including a minimum of 5 cases mediated to the point of agreement where an OAFM Accredited Mediator, FMC Certified Mediator or an ADR Institute of Ontario Certified Mediator has proved supervision and/or consultation. 

Successful applicants are subject to approval by the Ministry of the Attorney General to provide court connected Family Mediation and Information Services prior to final acceptance by DFCC.    We thank all applicants however; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Assessment Clinician - Fee-for-Service

DFCC is seeking Social Workers familiar with the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) to conduct youth assessments pursuant to Section 34 of the Act.  Section 34 of the YCJA authorizes the youth justice court to order that a young person be assessed by a qualified person(s) and the results be provided in writing to the Court.

A comprehensive Section 34 assessment includes social, psychological and often psychiatric components. The Assessment Clinician is responsible for:

  • Completing youth assessments including interviews with family and/or other organizations involved with the youth;
  • Liaising with psychologists/psychiatrists to coordinate appointments and receive their assessment report; and
  • Ensuring the completed assessment reports are delivered within time frames required by the Courts.

Service requirements are dependent on the Courts and therefore this is a contract fee for service opportunity.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from a recognized University with a specialization in an area related to the position (e.g. Social Work, Criminology, Sociology, Psychology or related discipline) or equivalent combined education and experience.
  • Several years experience and training in the area of assessing at risk youth and formulating recommendations.

Family Mediation Internship

The goal of the DFCC mediation intern program is to provide less experienced mediators with the opportunity to obtain practical experience, bridge the gap between theory and practice and provide exposure to court-connected family mediation and information services.  Click here for full details.

The Durham Family Court Clinic is an innovative, not-for-profit, charitable, progressive organization that is dedicated to fostering a healthy and safe community by enhancing and supporting the well-being of children, youth and families who have, or may have, involvement with the legal system.

The Board is seeking individuals who are interested in contributing their skills and experience to DFCC, have experience or are familiar with Board Governance, who live or work in Durham Region and are able to attend one meeting per month.
